The second largest of the Shaiva akhadas, and by long reputation the most learned — the house where a high proportion of sadhus hold degrees in Sanskrit, Vedanta and the shastras.
The name Niranjani means "the stainless, the one without blemish" — a name of the absolute in its unconditioned state. Its iṣṭa-devatā is Kartikeya, the son of Shiva who was born to command the armies of the devas: the deity of a house that has always understood itself as disciplined, organised and answerable.
Niranjani holds a particular place among the akhadas because of its learning. Where an akhada is often imagined as a martial order, Niranjani's standing rests on the number of its sadhus who are formally trained — in Sanskrit grammar, in Advaita Vedanta, in the six darshanas — and it has for generations supplied the akhada world with its administrators and its negotiators.
The akhada's senior figures have repeatedly held the highest offices of the akhada world. Mahant Ravindra Puri, secretary of Niranjani Akhada, serves as Adhyaksha (president) of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad and as head of the Mansa Devi temple trust at Haridwar. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri is the acharya of the akhada and among the most widely known sadhus of the present Kumbh era.
It was in a meeting of the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand with the acharyas of all thirteen akhadas, announced through the Parishad, that the Haridwar 2027 snan calendar was settled on 28 November 2025 — the schedule that gives that Ardh Kumbh four Amrit Snans, the first time any Ardh Kumbh at Haridwar has carried four.
Niranjani's Peshwai and its place in the Amrit Snan order are fixed by the same tradition and negotiation that governs every akhada. Between the snans its camp is one of the Mela's intellectual centres: discourse in the mornings and evenings, debate on points of shastra, and the initiations and appointments that only a Kumbh can validate.
The Anand Akhada is traditionally allied to Niranjani and processes with it — one of the several standing alliances that bind the seven Shaiva akhadas into a smaller number of practical blocs at the Mela.
