Where Ganga leaves the Himalaya and enters the plains — and where, the Puranas say, drops of Amrit fell into the Brahma Kund at Har Ki Pauri. The next great gathering on her banks begins on Makar Sankranti 2027.
Haridwar — Hari-dvāra, the Door of the Lord — is where the Ganga, having carved her way down from Gangotri through the mountains of Devabhumi, first touches the plains of Bharat. The ancients called this place Mayapuri, one of the seven Moksha-puris, the cities where liberation itself is said to be granted. When Garuda carried the Kumbh of Amrit after the churning of the ocean, drops of the nectar fell here, into the pool now called Brahma Kund at Har Ki Pauri — "the footsteps of Hari" — where a footprint of Lord Vishnu is enshrined on the upper wall of the ghat.
The Kumbh comes to Haridwar when Guru (Jupiter) stands in Kumbha rashi (Aquarius) and Surya enters Mesha (Aries). Between the twelve-yearly Purna Kumbhs, Haridwar also observes the Ardh Kumbh — the "half Kumbh" at the six-year midpoint — and it is this that arrives in 2027, following the Purna Kumbh of 2021. Do not let the word "Ardh" diminish it: the same Ganga, the same Brahma Kund, the same Akharas, and crores of pilgrims. For the first time in Haridwar's history the state has formally adopted the ancient name for the royal baths — Amrit Snan.

The heart of every Haridwar Kumbh. Here the evening Ganga Aarti sets a thousand diya-flames afloat on the river, and here the Amrit fell. On Amrit Snan days the ghat is reserved in turns for the thirteen Akharas; ordinary pilgrims bathe before and after the processions, or at the neighbouring ghats along the canal.
The tradition holds that a Kumbh snan at Haridwar dissolves the accumulated karmas of many births, grants the merit of a thousand Ashvamedha yajnas, and — because Haridwar is a Moksha-puri — carries the soul toward liberation itself. Beyond the shastra: to stand in the ice-cold Ganga at dawn among millions of chanting pilgrims, with the Himalaya at your back, is an experience that permanently enlarges the heart. Pilgrims consistently describe the Kumbh as the moment their faith became first-hand.
The Haridwar Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027 runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027. For the first time an Ardh Kumbh carries four Amrit Snan (Shahi Snan) days: 6 March (Maha Shivratri), 8 March (Somvati / Phalguna Amavasya), 14 April (Mesha Sankranti / Baisakhi) and 20 April 2027 (Chaitra Purnima). Six further parva snans fall on 14 January, 6 February, 11 February, 20 February, 7 April and 15 April 2027 — ten bathing days in all.
The schedule was settled at Haridwar on 28 November 2025, in a meeting on the bank of Ganga between the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and the acharyas of all thirteen Akhadas, and announced through the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad. All thirteen Akhadas have accepted it. Snan dates of this kind are fixed by the tithi rather than by the civil calendar, so the day can still be refined by a few hours when the state publishes its final Mela notification; we update this page whenever it does.
